The Lunar New Year is the most important festival in China. It is celebrated with exciting activities in a joyous and auspicious atmosphere. The first day of the first month of the lunar year is called Yuan-dan, or New Year's Day. Officials extend their New Year's greetings to each other. Ordinary people too, wear their best clothes and pay New Year's calls. Rich and poor alike visit Buddhist temples and Taoist monasteries in incessant streams throughout the day. Every household enjoys a feast, ringing with conversation and laughter.
